Debut novel which won the Adam Foundation Prize in Creative Writing at Victoria University. The story opens with a eulogy to Gene’s father Clifford and the discovery of his diaries.  Gene and his sisters have their own ways of digging into the past, and their mother has a different tale to tell about her 1940s Berlin childhood.  The setting is New Zealand, the novel spans decades and continents, the writing is economical and crisp.
