Charlotte is inspired by the life and death of Charlotte Salomon, one of Germany’s great modern artists. Born in Berlin in 1917 and unknown in her lifetime, she died in Auschwitz in 1943. Her legacy was an autobiographical series of works, painted in France while in hiding from the Nazis, which have inspired films, plays and an opera. Written in short sentences which looks like poetry, David Foenkinos has written a stunning book, sad, affecting and highly critically acclaimed.
